When Lee Smith, a Midwestern drag racing legend, got ahold of one of the two Hemi Station Wagons which Plymouth produced in 1966, drag racing history would never be the same. A station wagon was found to be the perfect long projectile to launch in a straight line. And Lee Smith made the most of this unusual factory wagon by campaigning it as the 1966 Plymouth Hemi Whackee Wagon. It is now a fun part of drag racing history.
This week, WeBe Autos is selling the original Hemi Whackee Wagon (Smith only campaigned one under this nickname.) It has been written up in countless magazine articles and its rich provenance make it one of the most desirable nostalgia race cars in existence.
Plymouth only manufactured two Belvedere Hemi station wagons, one with an automatic and one with a 4-speed. Smith's is the 4-speed. It won the Rockford Dragway Gas Coupe and Sedan Nationals. You can see a photo of Smith with the trophy in the ad photos. WeBe Autos tells us he also won the Street Eliminator at the World Series at Cordova Raceway with a 10.79 at 129.97 miles per hour.
The paint scheme you see here in the photos was one of two paint versions used by Smith on this car. This one is the most famous. WeBe Autos says it looks even better in person than in these photos. You can read the rest of their description at the ad link above. Hemmings Motor News did a recent story on the Hemi Whackee Wagon with a historic perspective on the car and its impact on the drag racing scene back in the day.

As the prices on 1966 through 1971 Chevelle Super Sports keep escalating, it becomes more and more important not to make a mistake on condition when buying one. Condition class determines value. An Iowa man wanted us to go half-way across the country to the West Coast to inspect a 1970 Chevelle SS which he wanted to buy. He was aware that the air conditioning was not working, but he wanted us to make sure the body panels were solid. The independent inspector found that the air conditioning compressor was not locked up and the clutch turned freely. Although the body work was done nicely, he found bondo throughout the body. He also found some rust in the trunk due to leaks in the weather stripping. The paint had some scratches in it. The transmission was definitely not matching numbers. Overall, the Chevelle performed well and would be a fair Number Three driver. At least now the buyer knew what he was getting into.
Our newsletter readers know that you should always have a pre-purchase inspection done on a collector vehicle before you buy. There are no warranties on old cars, so it is buyer beware when purchasing a collector car. Click here to find out how to order a pre-purchase inspection and appraisal.

A real deal 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 has been posted in the Cars-On-Line Chevelle Section this week. In Tuxedo Black with white stripes, it is offered for sale through WeBe Autos, an internet broker representing their collector client. They tell us it has its original 454/450 hp drive train with a Muncie M-22 Rock Crusher 4-speed transmission. It just doesn't get any better than this. The subject of a frame-off rotisserie restoration, they say it now has just 9 miles since completion. It comes with the F41 suspension, 12-bolt posi rear end, power front disc brakes, tach and U14 gauges. It retains its original complete smog system.

Did you know Pontiac made horse drawn buggies and carriages before the automobile was introduced? At the time they were called the Pontiac Buggy Company. (In 1907 this company built a horseless carriage which they called the Oakland using part of the Pontiac Buggy Company shop.) This vintage 1898 edition Pontiac Buggy is mostly original and is an incredible piece of history especially for the discerning Pontiac collector that thought they had one of everything. It still features the original candle lit lanterns. It is being offered for sale by Coast Motor Company in Palmetto, Florida. They just posted it with a set of interesting photos.

Pontiac only built 168 units of the 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge Convertible. This one is being offered for sale by its private party owner from Ohio. It is believed to be one of only two produced in the burgundy color. It has the 400 ci V8 engine hooked up to an automatic transmission and a 4-barrel carburetor under a Ram Air hood with hood mounted tach. With factory air conditioning, dual exhaust and a rear spoiler, it has all the features you want in a bonafide Judge. Most of these GTO Judge convertibles today do not come with documentation, but this one does, says the owner. He says the original build sheet, Pontiac Historical Society documents and Protect-O-Plate go with the sale. This car has benefitted from a recent frame-off restoration as you can see from the photos. A GTO Judge convertible does not come along very often, much less one with documentation. This one is for the discerning collector.

We are just a week away now from the Raleigh Winter Classic Auction, coming up December 2-3, 2022. It is significant because it will be the last big collector car auction for 2022. Held in Youngsville, North Carolina at the Capitol Auto Auction facility, the Raleigh Winter Classic will have over 300 cars and trucks in their inventory. It has the reputation for offering a number of low mile classic cars with provenance. Here is a sampling of what will be for sale.
Some of the top collectors from the Southeastern states bring their cars to sell at the Raleigh Winter Classic here in Youngsville, North Carolina. For instance, you will get a chance to bid on this 1942 Packard 120 Convertible at the Raleigh Classic in two weeks. It is one of 960 produced and features an inline 8 cylinder engine and 3 speed manual column shift transmission. Raleigh's classic car experts tell us it has received a recent tune up and has been parked in the same collection for the past 8 years. They say this Packard runs and drives great.
And if you are looking for a classic Cadillac from the '50s the Raleigh Winter Classic will fill your need. There is no other auction that has more quality classic Caddies than this one. The elegant 1954 Cadillac Eldorado Special Convertible is a great example. A rare burgundy convertible top matches the deep red leather interior contrasting the white body and Eldorado stainless rocker trim. Only 2,150 Eldorado Specials were produced in 1954. It features power steering, power brakes, power windows, power top, Autronic Eye, deluxe vertical/horizontal power seat, parade boot, chrome wire wheels.
The quality of the muscle cars being offered at the Raleigh Winter Classic will amaze you. Here is a 1968 Shelby GT500 Convertible in Lime Gold with the big block 428 Cobra Jet engine. It is one of only 402 Shelby GT500 convertibles produced in 1968. It will be cross the auction stage in Youngsville on Saturday. The Raleigh people tell us it has just 62k original miles, and both the engine and transmission are numbers matching. Options include 10-spoke wheels, power steering, power brakes, rare tilt-away steering wheel, power top and seldom-seen back glass.
One of the most insteresting production cars/trucks we have seen this year will be offered for sale on Saturday at the Raleigh Winter Classic in Youngsville, December 3. It is a 1959 Chevrolet El Camino with Highland Green over Classic Cream finish and a 348 ci V8 big block motor. It comes with factory-correct air conditioning, power steering and power brakes, along with a push-button AM radio. Wait till you see the tri-color upholstery. Check the photos at the link above. The line-up of rare classic 1950's cars is top notch. Check this link to see more.
Particular to the Raleigh Winter Classic, elite specialty late model sports cars are often offered here that you won't see anywhere else. This 2010 Roush 427R Mustang is one of those special late model sports cars. Roush-charged 4.6L powertrain put out 435 horsepower, making it more powerful than even the Shelby GT500 that year. The Roush suspension system under the chassis produces a far superior handling and driving experience, and this one comes with many upgrades. You will find it offered to the highest bidder in Youngsville during the Raleigh Classic on Saturday.

This is a real deal and rare 1969 Plymouth Road Runner Convertible. Only when they restored it they added one extra item, a 426 Hemi motor. So now it is a Hemi Road Runner convertible. Of course, Plymouth never made one, so here is the only one known to exist. It is being offered for sale by WeBe Autos, an internet broker working for their collector client. They say it is a real RM27, in R6 Scorch Red, freshly restored to fender tag options.

The DEAL of the DAY preview gives you first shot at all the cars that will be highlighted in the DEAL of the DAY feature on the Cars On Line homepage. Often these cars sell in the newsletter before they even make it to the homepage!

The best priced muscle car in this week’s edition of the Cars-On-Line newsletter is not a car at all but this sharp black 1971 Chevrolet El Camino SS with the red stripes. It has a cowl induction hood, automatic transmission, V8 engine, Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor, power steering, SS package, dual exhaust outlet and cargo bed. It is being offered for sale by Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. They say a Protect-O-Plate and service receipts totalling over $13,700 invested. You may want to have it inspected to get a better feel for the condition class and see whether any numbers match on this one. But hurry. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $19,750.

If Ford's Model T was known as the "Tin Lizzie" then the Model A would be considered the "Baby Lincoln." That's the way the owner of this 1930 Ford Model A Coupe thinks anyway. So much money has been invested in this one that the seller has more invested than he is asking for it. Much has been upgraded, although it looks entirely original. The seller is using the Classic Auto Mall to market this one for sale. They tell us it drives like a Model A should with good 4-wheel drum brakes that take a little strength to operate. You might want to consider having a pre-purchase inspection done on this one to find out how it drives out. Nice for parades but will it get up to 60 on the freeway? However, it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is $18,500.

Ford Fairlane Sunliners are highly desirable among Ford collectors. Many of them sell in the six figure range. But here is one you can afford. It is a 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Sunliner being offered for sale through Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. (They seem to be dominating the Deals of the Day this week.) They tell us it is a well-priced American classic that will benefit from some light cosmetics to bring back its true beauty. You can tell from the ad photos that it needs help, so it is only for the right kind of buyer who can do some restoration work. That is why a pre-purchase inspection would be important on this one. But hurry! It comes with an automatic transmission, V8 engine, four-barrel carburetor, power steering, and after-market wheels. But it will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The asking price is only $15,750.

Studebaker was not afraid to go against the grain of buildng cookie cutter cars in mass quantities like the "Big Three" automakers. Their European influenced design of the GT Hawk was a great example. Here is a 1962 Studebaker GT Hawk, built n the grand style of the Gran Turismo's of Europe. It has the 289 V8 engine, automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes. It is being offered for sale through Haggle Me, and internet broker representing the seller. They tell us it is a "Very solid car. Runs and drives well." It is probably the real sleeper of this week's DEALs of the DAY feature. Only a pre-purchase inspection will tell you the condition class. But from the photos you might glean some information. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. The asking price is $12,500.

One can only hope this 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 will run and drive as good as it looks here. The body is a little rough and there are some miss matched paint and faded body panels, probably because quarter has been replaced. On consignment now at the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pennsylvania this Galaxie has been in the same family ever since it was new. They say it drives out nice with no creeking or squeaking. They believe the 352 ci V8 is original to the car, but no mention of any documentation. You might say it is driver quality but it probably is in need of some cosmetics. Have it inspected to find out more. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $13,500.

If you are a Ford Thunderbird afficionado you know that the 1966 Ford Thunderbird was a world class sport luxury car. (We call them "country club cars.") This is the one you want to check out. Look at the way it shines in the photos. The seller says it really is "all that." He says it is a California car with 70k miles. The interior condition "is excellent," he says, as evidenced by the photos. It has the 390 ci V8, automatic transmission. swing away steering wheel, and bucket seat interior with that spectacular console. Have it inspected before you buy so you can determine the condition class prior to the sale. But hurry! This may be the one! Anyway, it will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week. The asking price is $15,500.

If you have looked at many Ford Galaxie 500 convertibles over the years you may have noted that there are not too many in driver quality condition. You have to be a Ford guy to know how to keep them in good repair. This 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible seems to be the exception, according to the Classic Auto Mall. They like the panel fitment and condition of the chrome and stainless overall. They gush about the interior and say the dash has been restored. Everything works, even. They tell of how the 390 engine starts right up and the automatic transmission shifts smoothly. We still think it is a good idea to have it inspected before you buy so you are aware of the condition class. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY by the end of next week. That is because the asking price is $24,500.
